May 23, 2008--The first day's play at the NCAA Finals of Women's Golf was haulted by wind, a rarety in golf. And then the third round was suspended by lightning. So not only did UNLV's five Lady Rebel golfers--all playing in their first Finals--have to battle nerves, the course, and the other teams, they were going to toe-to-toe with Mother Nature. But the team has survived, posting a very solid round two score and challenging to record the best team finish in the history of UNLV Women's Golf. “The conditions were very tough today and overall, they have been tough the past two days,” UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. “It has been very windy and cold, but we are hanging in there.” Therese Koelbaek and Natasha Krishna (pictured) are leading the Lady Rebels. May 20, 2008 (UPDATED MAY 22) --The Lady Rebel golfers of UNLV began play in the NCAA Finals for only the third time in the history of the program. The Lady Rebels finished 22nd in 2006 and 21st in 2004. And the Rebels are gaining a little national notoriety as Golfweek writer Asher Wildman has picked them as his 'sleeper story' of the event that is being played at the Championship course in New Mexico, site of the 1998 UNLV Men's Golf National Championship. "Who would have thought it? They look relaxed, focused and are accustomed to playing on the West Coast," wrote Wildman on Golfweek.com. Unfortunately, none of the writers picked UNLV to win the event, but who knows? Maybe the Lady Rebs will duplicate the history from 1998. May 17, 2008 (UPDATED MAY 18)--UNLV finished in 24th place at the NCAA West Regional event being played at the very difficult Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington. It was the team's worst finish at the event in head coach Dwaine Knight's 20 years on the job. The team is working on a streak of 20-straight NCAA Regional appearances and until last year, the lowest they had finished was 11th, but in 2007 the team struggled as well, finishing in a tie for 16th. So the Rebels are missing the NCAA Finals for the second-straight year, and just the 3rd time in those 20 years. The Rebels shot a stunning 23-over par total in the second round that was 28 shots behind USC, the leader by five shots over Oregon. Golfweek editor and Las Vegas resident Lance Ringler is at the event and says that the course is very hard, and all five Rebels found that out in the second round. "A team can afford to have two play bad, but all five and you are done at Gold Mountain," Ringler wrote in an email. May 11, 2008--UNLV freshman sensation Therese Koelbaek tied for medalist honors and the Rebel women's golf team finished third at the NCAA West Regional, which wrapped up Saturday at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The third-place finish by the Rebels ensured the squad of their third trip to the NCAA Championships, as they finished with a 54-hole total of 879 (288-290-301, +15). The top eight teams and top two individuals not on qualifying teams from each regional advanced to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 20-23 at the Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. UNLV's last trip to the NCAA Championships was in 2006, and the Rebels finished 22nd overall. In their first trip, the Rebels finished 21st at the 2004 national tournament. "We are so excited to be heading to Albuquerque," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "That was obviously the goal we set at the beginning of the year and to see it become a reality is so great. I am so proud of these girls. They have worked so hard."

May 10, 2008--Sometimes all it takes to completely put a college golf program on the map is that one standout player who steps up in a big event and helps lead a team to greatness. Monte Montgomery did that early on in UNLV Men's Head Golf Coach Dwaine Knight's career, and now it looks like Lady Rebel Freshman Therese Koelbaek is doing the same for the Lady Rebels and Head Coach Missy Ringler. She is battling for the NCAA West Regional title--heading into the final round with a three-shot lead, and has her team in the runner-up slot with 18 holes to play. “In the short history of this program we have had some great players and Therese is right up there with them,” Ringler said. “She is playing really well right now.” She fired a career-best round of 68 on Friday. May 9, 2008--The UNLV women’s golf team picked a great time to turn in its best round of the year, firing even par on Thursday to sit in third place following the opening day of the NCAA West Regional at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The Rebels had four players card rounds of 72 or better which led to the even-par score of 288, just one stroke behind second-place Tulsa and only five off the pace set by USC, which shot a 283 to grab the first-round lead. The even-par round is the best effort by a UNLV team at a NCAA regional and it tied for the fourth-best round to par in program history. “It is a great opening round for us,” UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. “Therese Koelbaek (pictured) played very well for us and we got the scores we needed to get from Kasi Lee and Tonya Choate. We just need to focus and take it one round at a time.” The top eight teams in the three-round event move on to the NCAA Finals. Follow the team now with LIVE SCORING.

April 26, 2008--The UNLV Rebel golf team finished fifth at the 2008 Mountain Conference Golf Championships, but sophomore Eddie Olson (pictured) won the tournament, and three Rebels were named to the All-Conference Team. Joining Olson--who fired a three-round total of 4-under par, 209 to win by three strokes--on the team were junior Seung-Su Han and senior Matt Kinsinger. The Rebel team led after round one of the tournament, but struggled to finish, something that usually doesn't happen to the team. UNLV Head Coach Dwaine Knight jnstills in his team that the final round should belong to the Rebels, but in this event the team shot a combined 292 total, good for only the sixth-best round of the day. The Rebels will learn their NCAA Regionals slot on Monday, May 5. Han and UNLV's Brett Kanda finished tied for 10th.

April 24, 2008 (UPDATED 5 PM PST) --The UNLV Mens Golf Team tees off today in the Mountain West Conference Tournament at the Tucson National Golf Club in Arizona, with play going through Saturday. The Rebels are led by senior Matt Kinsinger (pictured), who was named MWC Player of the Month last week. "He is playing very well at the moment and I am extremely proud of his accomplishments as a Rebel," says UNLV assistant coach Andy Bischel. "He came to us from Galena HS in Reno as a great student and an average golfer. He has worked harder than anyone on the team over the past five years to become a golfer who his coaches and teammates can rely on. Look for him as we go through the post-season." The Rebels play and practice at many of the best Las Vegas golf courses, including Southern Highlands Golf Club, the team's home course. April 19, 2008 (UPDATED APRIL 20)--Sunny Oh became the first former UNLV women's golfer to win a professional event, as she won the Bright House Networks Open this past weekend. Oh, playing on the Duramed Futures Tour, shot a final-round 69 (-3) for a three-round total of five-under 211, which had her tied for first with Kim Welch and Chella Choi. She sank a 20-foot putt on the first playoff hole on the Cleveland Heights Golf Course in Lakeland, Fla., giving her the first win of her professional career.
