Las Vegas Golf Notes: Two UNLV Rebels Make Golfworld Top 50 to Watch List

Image September 4, 2008--One player each from the UNLV men's and UNLV women's golf team have been picked by Golfworld Magazine as among the top 50 players to watch in college golf in 2008-09. Sueng-Su Han, who became the first collegiate golfer to successfully reach the finals of PGA Tour Q School last year, and Therese Koelbaek, who was a co-medalist at the NCAA Western Regionals last spring, are the two Rebels making the list. The UNLV Men were picked 22nd in the Golfworld and Golfweek pre-season polls, while the Lady Rebels are 34th in the Golfworld rankings. “As a freshman, Therese had one of the best years of any player we have had at UNLV,” syas head coach Missy Ringler. “She is very mature and besides her talent, her biggest strength may be her consistency from tournament to tournament. UNLV Golfer Natasha Krishna Wins Major Australian Tournament

Image July 31, 2008--Natasha Krishna, a junior for the nationally-ranked UNLV Rebel Women's golf team, won the South Australian Stroke Play Championship, becoming the first player from New Zealand to capture the title. The event was played at Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia, and Krishna survived a playoff to win. Krishna shot a final-round two-under 72 to come from behind and force a playoff with Ashlee Dewhurst, and Krishna took the championship on the third playoff hole. Krishna was in contention throughout the event, as she shot a second-round four-under 70 and followed that with a solid score of 75 (+1) in the third round. "It was windy and cold and not nice to be out there," Krishna said. "I was three under with four holes to play but dropped a shot at the 15th. I came here to trial for the New Zealand team. I want to be on the world championship team so bad and winning this tournament is a bonus."

UNLV Lady Rebels Finish Career Best at NCAA Finals; Next Year's Expectations To Be Through the Roof

Image May 24, 2008--The UNLV Lady Rebels kind of came from nowhere this year to end up qualifying for the NCAA Finals, and then finishing an all-time best 16th place in the event that was marred by extreme weather conditions. It was the third appearance for the Lady Rebels in the NCAA Finals, but the first for each of the players on the 2007-08 team. The Rebels overcame a devastating first-round score to play very solid the rest of the way and finish in the top 20 for the first time ever. “I am very proud of what this team was able to accomplish at the end of the season,” UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. “The girls held it together in very tough conditions. It makes me excited for the future of our program.” Four of the Rebels in this event return for next year and a solid recruiting class is on the way so the future is, indeed, bright for Lady Rebel golf. Golfweek writer Lance Ringler, star of Off Campus at Golfweektv.com, says the incoming Rebel recruits are stellar and include Kristen Schelling from Arizona, ranked #22 in her class, along with the two best players from the state of Nevada, Bethany Glassford and Stephanie Whatley, who are Southern Nevada residents.

Lightning, Wind, Rain, Etc. Can't Dampen Lady Rebels Spirit at NCAA Finals
