Five Las Vegas Golfers Finish in Top 40 of US Women's Open, led by Park, Gulbis |
In-Bee Park July 2, 2007--Led by 18-year old In-Bee Park, a former golfer at Las Vegas high school Bishop Gorman, the contingent of five women golfers representing the Las Vegas golf region at the US Women's Open at Pine Needles in North Carolina, all had solid finishes. Park shared the lead after the second round before finishing in 4th, while Natalie Gulbis, a resident of Lake Las Vegas Resort who lives on the fairways of Las Vegas golf course Reflection Bay Golf Club, battled her recent back-pain issues to finish in a tie for 35th. She spent part of the weather delay on Friday e-mailing a Las Vegas golf writer who was inquiring about the tough course, and the status of her back. "My back is better, thanks," she pounded out on her Blackberry. "I am doing about two or three hours of rehab daily ... a combination of electric stimulation, laser for pain and inflamation, manual soft tissue and stretch, ice heat and also rehab to strenghten the core." |

Las Vegas Golfer Natalie Gulbis and Michelle Wie Pairing Full of Withdrawals |
|
June 27, 2007 (UPDATE: 11 AM PST; June 28)--It's the best and worst of the golf world in the 8:06 AM pairing at Pine Needles at this week's US Womens Open. The pairing includes media darling Natalie Gulbis, and current media punching bag Michelle Wie. Gulbis seemingly never does anything wrong, and is loved by everyone and rightly so. The Lake Las Vegas resident spends the neccesary time doing and saying the right things, and her image typifies who she is as a person. Gulbis is one of five golfers in the field who have strong ties to Las Vegas golf courses. On the other end of the spectrum right now is Wie, who is quickly spiraling out of control. First round UPDATE: Gulbis fires 74; Wie fires 82. LIVE SCORING ... now |

TPC Canyons Best of Las Vegas Golf Courses at VegasGolfer Pro Showdown |
|
June 21, 2007--The team representing TPC Canyons—Dan Hammel, Todd Hajduk, Jim Saub and Christine Fernandez—fired a seven-under-par total of 135 to beat 15 other teams in winning the 5th Annual VegasGolfer Pro Golf Showdown. The TPC Canyons’ victory snapped a three-year run of titles by Shadow Creek. Southern Highlands won the inaugural event. The team of four players split the top prize of $10,000 that went to the championship team. The VegasGolfer Pro Golf Showdown was created when writer Jack Sheehan wrote that the best golf course "team" in the valley would be Southern Highlands, hands down. Then publisher Brian Hurlburt helped secure Rio Secco Golf Club --through a generous donation from Eric Dutt--and an annual event was born, and who REALLY was the best team was decided on the course. The staff at VegasGolfer Magazine works hard to ensure that the event is first-class, and everyone has a great time. |

Las Vegas Golfer and Papa Chris Riley Wins Nationwide Event on Father's Day |
June 19, 2007--You gotta love Chris Riley. If you polled PGA Tour players, he would be near the top of the list under the category of nicest player or most friendly. He has an infectious personality, and when you talk with him, it's tough to get a word in because he's too busy asking you questions. Recently, Mr.Nice Guy won the Rochester Area Charities Showdown at Somerby presented by Think, joining other Las Vegas golfers John Riegger and Skip Kendall as Nationwide Tour champions in 2007. The win was his first on a tour since capturing the PGA Tour's 2002 Reno-Tahoe Open. For Riley the win was great, but playing golf kept him away from his family. |

Other Las Vegas golfers playing include Jason Allen, a regional qualifier, Chad Campbell, a former UNLV All-American, and Dean Wilson, a Las Vegas resident. 'Gutsy' Las Vegas Native Scott Piercy Wins $2 Million at The Ultimate Game |
|
June 9, 2007--Scott Piercy stood on the 18th tee knowing that he only needed two more good shots and he woould become a millionaire. The 18th hole at Wynn Las Vegas is a par 4, with water down the entire left side. Despite horribly pulling his second shot, it still landed on the green. And then, as the Strip hotels glistened to life in the background, Piercy drained the final par putt, after firing a five-under par 31 on the treacherous back nine of the WYNN Las Vegas Golf and Country Club, and claimed the biggest first prize in all of golf: $2 million at the Ultimate Game at Wynn Las Vegas. |

Las Vegas Golfer John Riegger Wins on Nationwide Tour After 290 Tries |
June 4, 2007--After 290 tries in PGA Tour-sanctioned events, Las Vegas pro John Riegger is in the winner's circle for the first time. The 43-year old Riegger, who lives in Las Vegas and plays a lot at TPC Summerlin, earned the title at the Lasalle Bank Open when he holed a treacherous, 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to edge B.J. Staten by a stroke. Riegger won the 1996 Columbian Open, but hasn't tasted victory since. He has battled various injuries over the last several years, and is reportedly having a cortisone injection in his back this week. Even through the tough times, he never lost faith. "You have to have confidence and faith in yourself,'' he told PGATOUR.com. "I wouldn't still be doing this if I didn't think I could win out here and on the PGA TOUR. And the fact of the matter is, I've always believed I could play.'' Read the PGATour.com story ... now. |
