British Open: You Can Learn Butch Harmon's Tips, Just Like Els, Scott, Mickelson |
July 15, 2008--It's not news that Las Vegas' Butch Harmon will have several players he works with teeing it up in a major championship this week at the British Open at Royal Birkdale. Among them are Phil Mickelson, former UNLV golfer Adam Scott and Ernie Els, each boasting a legit shot at lifting the Claret Jug. But what could be news for some is that everyday golfers can journey to Las Vegas' Butch Harmon School of Golf to learn from the teacher that Golf Digest has named, through voting by his peers, as the World's Number One Golf Instructor. The school, located at Las Vegas golf course Rio Secco Golf Club, is open to the public and offers schools featuring Harmon or his other highly-acclaimed teaching team members that includes Shawn Callahan, who works with PGA Tour star Charley Hoffman and helped hone the swing of recent U.S. Women's Open Champ Inbee Park, among others. Or, if you can't physically make it to the school, you can easily click to ButchHarmon.com for dozens of online print golf tips and video golf tips that will help your swing. |

Watch PGA Tour Stars Tiger Woods, Charley Hoffman Give Exclusive Clinic at Las Vegas Golf Course |
May 30, 2008--About a month ago, Tiger Woods held his annual Tiger Jam event in Las Vegas that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. The event was held just days after his knee surgery, and in this video from ATT Blue Room Sports, you can watch as Tiger Woods and Las Vegas golfer Charley Hoffman give a clinic at Cascata, one of the best Las Vegas golf courses. Tiger serves as the emcee--while on crutches--while Hoffman hits shots, and the two discuss their playing philosophies. Hoffman is known as one of the Tour's funniest guys, and his personality comes through in the video. At one point Hoffman says, "I schedule my events around Tiger's ... I'm going to be playing a lot in the next month." To that Tiger responds dryly: "If that's the case, I'm coming back early!" Click here to watch the exclusive Las Vegas golf clinic video now (the video takes a few seconds to start rolling). The clinic was a part of Tiger Jam XI presented by AT&T that featured a concert by Van Halen in addition to other festivities. |

Even if the adage is "Drive for Show, Putt For Dough" we all love the long ball. And now VIP Golf Academy Director of Instruction Earl Svenningsen tells us the key to hitting it longer "is a function of clubhead speed, weight shift, and body turn or torque. Those three elements done together will give you the maximum power. The wider the arc and the faster the club is swung will result in longer tee shots." Las Vegas Golf Visionary Says Pull the Trigger, Envision Success |
November 24, 2007 (Portions of this article originally appeared in In Business Las Vegas)--"Golf is 90% mental; the other 10% is mental," legendary instructor Jim Flick once said. It's a funny line and one that emphasizes the mental challenges that come with playing golf. But one local guy, Dr. Edward Klein, is here to help us all. The first thing that you see when Klein walks up is the championship ring he earned with the Tampa Lightning when the team won the Stanley Cup in 2004. It seemingly shines as he walks, and could be taken as a monument to the success that can happen when athletes and/or teams utilize a sports psychologist. Klein, who recently moved to Las Vegas from Florida to be closer to family, has a long history of working with top level athletes in many sports including hockey, baseball, figure skating, and yes, golf. He received his MD from the University of Louisville Medical School and then served his psychiatric residency at the NYU Bellevue Hospital Center before a long and successful career in private practice. For about the last 20 years he has been working solely in the athletic arena. And now is very interested in helping Las Vegas golfers play Las Vegas golf courses better. |

April 17, 2006--With all of the new golf club technology, hitting it longer is everyone’s goal. Unfortunately, for most of us this means farther left or farther right. But by following these three simple steps you will gain distance and land in the fairway much more often. Step one—(Don’t) Squeeze the toothpaste Remember to grip the club lightly. A light grip will help promote club head speed and better timing. Feel like you are holding a tube of toothpaste upside down with no lid and you do not want to squeeze out the toothpaste on the floor. |
