October 27, 2009--They are both now official Las Vegas golfers, and they have each lost a PGA Tour event via a sudden death playoff in the last two weeks. But now they share something pretty much in common: one is the odds-on favorite to win the PGA Tour's Viking Classic, while the other is near the top of the betting odds very early in his career. Former UNLV All-American Chad Campbell, who narrowly lost Las Vegas' Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is 15/1 to win, while new Las Vegas resident Ricky Fowler, who was edged in last week's FRYS.com Open in Arizona, is listed at 25/1, in only his third event as a pro on the PGA Tour. Go to Las Vegas' GolfOdds.com for more betting numbers and line changes.
Other numbers include David Toms and Matt Kuchar at 20/; a large group at 25/1 including Troy Matteson, the FRYS.com Open champion, Bo Van Pelt, Heath Slocum, and DJ Trahan; Jonathan Byrd and Jason Bohn are 30/1; and another group is at 40/1 including Las Vegas golfers Charley Hoffman and Alex Cejka. Hoffman was on the 1998 UNLV National Championship team and lives in Las Vegas while Cejka is now a Las Vegas resident. There are now at least 30 professionals who play on the world's biggest tours who have very strong ties to Las Vegas golf courses. Former UNLV Rebels Chris Riley and Bill Lunde are 60/1, while Las Vegas resident Dean Wilson is 100/1. Other notable players and their odds are John Daly (200/1) and David Duval (200/1). The field is 2/1. Some of the individual golf betting matchups are Chad Campbell (-120) over David Toms (even); Ricky Fowler (-110) vs. Michael Sim (-110); Heath Slocum (-110) vs. DJ Trahan (-110); and Bo Van Pelt (-110) vs. Troy Matteson (-110). The Las Vegas Golf Region is also home to more than 50 world class golf courses, highlighted by several including Angel Park Golf Club, dubbed the world's most complete golf experience. Angel Park is the home of two Las Vegas golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer, a lighted par 3 and complete practice area, an all-grass putting course, and a full-service pro shop and restaurant. Campbell lost two events in 2009 in a playoff. He came with a 9-iron away from the winning the Masters, and then also narrowly lost his 'hometown' event, the JT Shriners Open. He has earned more than $1.725 million in 2009, good for 46th on the PGA Tour money list entering the Viking Classic, which will be played Annandale Golf Club in Mississippi. Fowler is making a strong surge to secure his 2010 PGA Tour playing privileges prior to Q School. Fowler, who moved to Las Vegas about three weeks ago, has earned $553,700 in his starts this year, and would be 135th on the money list if here were a PGA Tour member. Should he earn enough to finish within the top 125, he will earn his exempt status for next season. Entering the Viking Classic, Fowler is about $70,000 out of the 125th spot on the list. |
