November 18, 2009--Sometimes when you are a writer, you just plain get scooped, and that is the case this day as Norm, the Celebrity Reporter from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, has reported the inside details about Vice President Joe Biden playing golf at Lake Las Vegas Resort over the weekend. Click now to read Norm's story about how Biden needed a bit more juice to earn a spot at this private Las Vegas golf course. But Biden wasn't the only big name teeing it up at Las Vegas golf courses recently as Las Vegas resident Greg Maddux was one of many UNLV golf supporters who turned out at Southern Highlands for Rebel Golf Day.
Maddux, the 4-time Cy Young Award winner and future Hall-of-Famer, grew up in Las Vegas and is a regular at many of Las Vegas' best golf courses, and routinely lends his name to charity events. But on this day, Maddux was out to support the team and UNLV Head Golf Coach Dwaine Knight at the Rebels' home course, the beautiful and private Southern Highlands Golf Club, the final golf course designed together by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and Sr. Maddux was joined by current members of the UNLV golf team in addition to former members, including 1991 NCAA champion Warren Schutte and Chris Berry, the hero of the 1998 NCAA Championship squad that also featured current PGA Tour stars Charley Hoffman and Bill Lunde. Hitting shots on one of the holes for the VIPs of the Rebel Golf Foundation was Derek Ernst, who recently was named Mountain West Golfer of the Month and who is currently the nation's 6th-ranked college player according to Golfstat. In other Las Vegas golf news, several champions were recently crowned at the Clark County Amateur played at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The event is a major on the Southern Nevada Golf Association schedule. Among the winners were Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame member Brady Exber, who earned the Senior Division title, and State Senator Bob Coffin, who won the Super Senior Division Scratch title with rounds of 75-76. Also, Coronado High School Golf Coach Joe Sawaia held off Exber to win the Championship Division title while battling tough conditions. Sawaia edged Exber on the first playoff hole after both finished regulation at 2-under par. Coffin was a member of the first-ever UNLV golf team. Boulder Creek Golf Club is a Las Vegas resort golf course featuring 27 holes of Mark Rathert golf at a good value. Maddux also recently teed it up at the Danny Gans Partee Fore Kids Memorial Pro-am at Las Vegas golf course DragonRidge Country Club. The event benefits The First Tee of Southern Nevada, and was played in honor of the late Danny Gans, who passed away suddenly earlier this year. Gans was a longtime supporter of the junior golf organization. Comedian Rita Rudner served as the honorary hostess of the event and was joined by fellow celebrities to honor Gans. Plus, Gans' son, Andrew, gave a moving speech about the impact his father made in his life and others. The event was made possible by a generous donation from Cox Communications, via Steve Schorr, who has ensured that the event will be played in Gans' honor well into the future.
