You always remember your first, right? Well, Painted Desert Golf Club in Las Vegas was the first true desert golf experience (it opened in 1987) to hit Southern Nevada. And over the last couple decades, the course has stood the test of time and still ranks as one of the best golf challenges on the Las Vegas golf scene. Sometimes desert golf courses can scare off linksters, but Painted Desert offers up desert intrigue while providing a very fair setup. There are very few forced carries, and the fairways are generous enough to still capture an errant drive. As with any course, a horrible shot will be penalized. But even when you hit one a little crooked and find the Painted Desert Golf Club waste areas, you still might be in luck because the desert can be playable. Over the years, Painted Desert has played host to local amateur events and was in the rotation for the Nevada Open. The par 3, 187-yard 8th hole is a favorite for all who play it. A large lake fronts the oblong green, while native vegetation flanks the coast of the water and grass. Strategic bunkers dot the rest of the hole. Local PGA Tour star Robert Gamez, who grew up in the Las Vegas area playing junior and high school golf, still holds the course record at 62. The course measures par 72 and stretches out to 6,781 yards. The course is designed by the esteemed Jay Morrish. Painted Desert is now operated by EAGLE Golf. Official Painted Desert website
