College Roomies Play Masters Together; Vegas Golf's Wilson Calls Course Setup 'Disappointing' Print E-mail

Dean Wilson
Dean Wilson
April 8, 2007--Dean Wilson moved to Las Vegas a few years ago, but before his days of living and golfing in our so called "sin city" he lived in Utah, playing college golf at BYU with eventual Masters champion Mike Weir. The two were roommates and best friends. Back then, they never even dreamed about what they became on Saturday at the 2007 Masters: playing partners on the golf world's biggest stage. According to Salt Lakes City Tribune columnist Kurt Kragthorpe, both ended the round with disastrous results, and then made comments less than complimentary about the course setup and the committee behind it.

"Disappointing" is how Kragthorpe said Wilson summed up the course, while Weir went farther, saying, "I don't know what point they're trying to prove. Personally, I think they're missing the boat. I think it's a mistake, but it doesn't matter what I think."

No player at the 2007 Masters is under par, and Wilson had a very good chance of playing himself into solid contention before the tough finish. He ended the round at 76, but still stands in 16th place at 7-over par, just five shots off the pace set by Stuart Appleby. Tiger Woods is in 2nd at 3-over par. Wilson had a solid birdie chance on 17 but missed, and then hit a poor drive on 18 and ended with a double bogey.
