April 17, 2006--With all of the new golf club technology, hitting it longer is everyone’s goal. Unfortunately, for most of us this means farther left or farther right. But by following these three simple steps you will gain distance and land in the fairway much more often. Step one—(Don’t) Squeeze the toothpaste Remember to grip the club lightly. A light grip will help promote club head speed and better timing. Feel like you are holding a tube of toothpaste upside down with no lid and you do not want to squeeze out the toothpaste on the floor.
Greg Wickensimer, PGA Step two—The (slow) rhythm’s gonna get yaSwing at about 50% of your capacity. This will allow you to keep your balance and swing the club in rhythm with your body motion. Step three—Hit to the (close) target Use an intermediate target to help you line yourself down the fairway. This should be a divot, a broken tee or discolored grass a couple of feet in front of your ball. It’s easier to align yourself to something close rather than a target hundreds of yards away. Greg Wickenseimer, PGA, is the head professional at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort, home of 54 holes of Pete Dye golf, beauty and challenge. The Resort is also home to other clinics and golf schools so always check the official Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort website for all details. Want more Wickensimer golf knowledge or to take lessons?
