US Open Announcer Johnny Miller's Ties to Las Vegas Golf Strong |

The Badlands June 12, 2007--In 1973, Johnny Miller fired a near-perfect round at Oakmont Country Club, and his final-round 63 was good enough for him to win the US Open. Jack Nicklaus has called the round "one of the finest rounds of championship golf ever played," and Miller still refers to the round as the best of his life. This week, the US Open returns to the site of that infamous round--where Miller hit every green in regulation--and Miller will be in the NBC booth calling the action with his usually pointed and honest assessment of the competitors.
But as we watch here at GolfLasVegasNow.com, we will think a bit about his design handiwork on Las Vegas golf course, the Badlands Golf Club, a 27-hole Las Vegas golf course facility that he created with consultation by Chi Chi Rodriguez. Miller has called this Las Vegas golf course an "e-ticket ride at Disneyland", and there is no doubt that the Badlands is one of Las Vegas golf's most memorable golf courses. "The existing washes and arroyos provide dramatic visual appeal for the golf course at The Badlands," Miller said in 1995 about the Badlands. "Thousands of years of watershed runoff from the mountains created a wonderful canvas for our course design. With this natural landscap, we are able to route most of the holes along the natural cliffs and through the small gorges and depressions of the property. The course features are beautiful as well as challenging to play. Clearly the finished 'painting' is something very special."
