June 14, 2007--There are five golfers in the US Open being played at Oakmont with strong ties to Las Vegas and Las Vegas golf courses. The list is headed by Adam Scott, the fourth-ranked player in the world, and Ryan Moore, the 2004 US Amateur and NCAA Champion. Both Scott and Moore played college golf at powerhouse UNLV, and could challenge for the title. Other Las Vegas golfers playing include Jason Allen, a regional qualifier, Chad Campbell, a former UNLV All-American, and Dean Wilson, a Las Vegas resident. Scott is coming off two pretty good weeks, but is weary about Oakmont, the course many are calling one of the toughest in US Open history. LIVE SCORING ... now.
"I think we're going to see a lot of unusual things happening this week," he told theage.com, an Australian media outlet. "I think it's going to be a fun week, but adding up the scorecard might not be. It could be almost embarrassing. You've just got to hit the club that you feel most confident you can hit the fairway with." Johnny Miller, the NBC announcer and designer of Las Vegas golf course The Badlands, says the winning score could be lower than some think. "The Winning score ... it seems like 279, 280 has been sort of the magical number in the past ...," Miller told the media before the event. "That could be shot, no doubt about it, these guys are great. But a lot of the nay sayers are saying ridiculously high scores. But there's always somebody that can have a good tournament. I really believe that a great score will be 279, which will tie my score and tie a bunch of the other winning scores. Very likely that 284 could win. 284 is a nice number, isn't it, four 71s? That would be pretty nice. That would be pretty juicy." Read the Las Vegas-Review Journal article about Las Vegas resident's Jason Allen ... now.
