October 23, 2007--Golf instructor extraordinaire Butch Harmon is known for helping at least two very distinct animals—a Great White Shark (Greg Norman) and a Tiger (Tiger Woods)—but he is now doing some of his most meaningful work by helping thousands of cats and dogs in Las Vegas. Harmon is the host of the Gaudin Porsche Jaguar Aston Martin Fore the Love of Animals golf event that will be played November 13, 2007, at the Rees Jones-designed Cascata, one of two Harrah’s-owned Las Vegas golf courses (Rio Secco Golf Club). Harmon recently became a pet owner and jumped at the chance to help this worthy cause. Click now to sign up online to play ... now. For more ...
“I am a relative newcomer to the pet world with the happy addition of our two yellow Labrador brothers three years ago,” says Harmon, who operates the Butch Harmon School of Golf at Rio Secco Golf Club. “Hunter and Rio are my first experience with being a pet owner and their unconditional love has motivated me to get involved with the wonderful rescue organization, Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary. Since its inception in 2000, more than 7000 homeless cats and dogs have been saved and placed into new homes. More importantly, more than 21,000 animals have been spayed or neutered through the sanctuary's spay and neuter programs.” Harmon was recently voted by his peers as the number one golf instructor in a poll released by Golf Digest. It was the fifth-straight time he was voted number one. The public is invited to participate in the Fore the Love of Animals event, and several levels of sponsorship are available. In addition to the golf tournament there will be a VIP welcome reception November 12 at Rio Secco, and Harmon will conduct a special clinic before the golf event. Both amateur and golf professionals are welcome. Complete event information and details are available at hcws.org/golf/.
About Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary was founded in 2000 by a group of 5 individuals dedicated to ending the senseless killing of over 25,000 animals in the Las Vegas area shelters annually. The organization focuses mainly on offering low-cost spay/neuter programs and various adoption locations to reach this goal. HCWS is a non-profit organization that has more than 400 cats, all in foster homes, and more than 50 dogs who are located in two local prisons while enrolled in our 'Pups on Parole' program. Another program that benefits animals and children alike is the ‘Tales to Tails’ reading program that allows children to read to a specially-trained dog in a non-threatening and safe environment. Statistics reveal that children show a 30 to 50% improvement in their reading and vocabulary skills as well as a noticeable difference in their confidence and self image following the program.
