Former UNLV Lady Rebel Sunny Oh Wins as a Pro; Team Chases Conference Title Print E-mail

Image April 19, 2008 (UPDATED APRIL 20)--Sunny Oh became the first former UNLV women's golfer to win a professional event, as she won the Bright House Networks Open this past weekend. Oh, playing on the Duramed Futures Tour, shot a final-round 69 (-3) for a three-round total of five-under 211, which had her tied for first with Kim Welch and Chella Choi. She sank a 20-foot putt on the first playoff hole on the Cleveland Heights Golf Course in Lakeland, Fla., giving her the first win of her professional career. As a team, the Lady Rebels enter the third round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in third place. The Rebels finished the event in third place. Click here for the complete story. Oh was one of the most decorated golfers in the short history of the Rebel program, playing at UNLV in 2003 and 2004. She was the 2003 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, a two-time All-American, the 2003 NCAA West Regional Championship winner, the 2004 MWC Conference Player of the Year and a five-time collegiate winner, including the 2004 MWC Championship

"I am so excited for Sunny," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "She was one of the most talented players I have had the pleasure of coaching here at UNLV. I am sure this is the first of many victories for her."

The Rebels shot a second-round 306 (+14), giving them a two-day total of 614 (+30) heading into the final round tomorrow. Leading the way for UNLV is the freshman duo of Therese Koellbaek and Alejandra Guacaname, as they both are in the top 10 after two rounds of play.

"It was a solid day for us, we just could not make any birdies," RIngler said. Between the four players that counted toward our score today, we only had a total of three birdies. WE are looking forward to getting those tomorrow."

Today's final round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. (PDT) and the first tee time for the Rebels will be Lee, who tees off of hole one at 9:10 a.m.
