Teams From All Over Hit Las Vegas for Cleveland Pro-Scratch at Angel Park Golf Club |
July 19, 2008--Two-player teams made up of an amateur and a professional from several states will be in town this Saturday through Monday for the annual Cleveland Pro-Scratch Las Vegas golf tournament at Angel Park Golf Club, the home of two Arnold Palmer-designed Las Vegas golf courses. A total purse of $18,000 is on the line, and the event is sponsored by Cleveland Golf and organized by OB Sports (they offer Las Vegas golf packages), the management company that operates two other Las Vegas golf courses, Legacy Golf Club and Aliante Golf Club. Teams from Florida, Oregon, Nevada, California, Washington and other states are competing. Past participants in the event include Las Vegas golfer and PGA Tour player Robert Gamez and Nationwide Tour player and member of the 1998 UNLV National Championship golf team Jeremy Anderson, among other notables. "Over the years the Cleveland Pro-Scratch was a great excuse to get together and have a lot of fun golfing in Vegas,” says Kris Strauss, Director of Sales and Marketing for OB Sports Golf Management. "While fun is still had by all, the generous support of Cleveland Golf and our other event sponsors, The Rio Hotel and Casino, Grey Goose, VegasGolfer, Taylored Golf Car Systems and Southern Wine and Spirits, has taken this event to the next level. There is some substantial cash to be won and we are extremely excited to tee it up." |

All-Time Las Vegas Golf Wins Leader Jim Furyk Battles at the British Open |
July 18, 2008 (8:15 AM PST)--Jim Furyk, who after two rounds at the British Open is two shots stood at 2-over par and well within the top 10, is the only multiple champion of Las Vegas' PGA Tour event, this year to be called the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He has hit the jackpot three times in Las Vegas, including in 1995 when he won his first PGA Tour event at what was then called the Las Vegas Invitational. Furyk went on to win the Las Vegas Invitational (played over three Las Vegas golf courses) two more times--in 1998 and 1999--and has finished in the top 10 six times. He has cashed checks in Las Vegas that total more than $2.1 million. Furyk had to make a lot of birdies to win in Vegas, unlike what he needs to do in an event like the British Open. Following his second Vegas win, he commented about how people perceived his game to be. "I think more people think of my game as playing solidly in the U.S. Open, when even par is a good score," Furyk told Brian Hilderbrand for a story in the official tournament program. "People think of my game as that I can grind it out and play on a real good, hard golf course and hit the ball straight and keep it in play. I don't think many people think of me in the style of going out there and shooting 66 every day and firing numbers like that." Furyk went a combined -82 during his Las Vegas golf tournament wins. Royal Birkdale's Brutal 6th Hole at British Open Can Be Played at Las Vegas Golf Course Royal Links |
July 17, 2008--The old saying is that if you birdie a tough hole during a round, you've picked up a shot on the field. But when it comes to the 499-yard, par 4, 6th hole at Royal Birkdale, site of the 2008 British Open (click for up-to-date leaderboard), a birdie there and you darn near pick up TWO shots on the field. And during an agonizing first round, Las Vegas golfer Adam Scott did just that, getting him to one-under par and into the lead for the moment. The 6th hole at Birkdale has been captured and nearly replicated at Las Vegas golf course Royal Links Golf Club, a course that honors the holes and tradition of the courses used in the Open rotation. At Royal Links, you will find the 6th hole playing as the par 4, 471-yard, 12th hole. This year, the Birkdale hole is being played about 20 yards longer than it was when the Open was played there in 1998. But aside from the yardage difference, and a new bunker that has been added at Birkdale to the left of the green, the two holes at Royal Birkdale and Royal Links (click to see a video) share the same look and playing feel.
