Rory McIlroy, Not Tiger Woods or Phil Mickleson, Golf Betting Favorite at PGA Tour's Barclays

August 25, 2010 (Las Vegas, Nevada)--The change of tide on the PGA Tour could be coming sooner than later. For the first time in a very long time, neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Mickelson are the golf betting favorites in the official PGA Tour golf betting odds released by Las Vegas oddsmaker Jeff Sherman. The man to beat in the initial Las Vegas golf betting odds for The Barclays is Rory McIlroy, one of the many young guns ready to pounce on the world's best golfers. Rory went off at 10/1 followed by Woods and Mickelson, each 12/1.--By Brian Hurlburt, odds by Jeff Sherman.

Steve Stricker was next at 15/1 followed by Jim Furyk at 20/1, but he has been scratched after showing up late for his pro-am tee time. Padraig Harrington and Dustin Johnson were each released at 25/1. But all eyes were on the top of the leaderboard where a new man was ready to grab the title. "At this point in time, Rory McIlroy is consistently outperforming Mickelson and Woods, and has the aggressiveness in his game to be a justified favorite this week," says Sherman, the founder of GolfOdds.com and the assistant director of the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook. "The last three events that the three of them played together, McIlroy beat Mickelson by 9 and Woods by 5 at the British Open, by 8 and 23 respectively at Bridgestone, and by 4 and 8 respectively at the PGA Championship. Performance fluctuations occur rapidly in golf so this could be a short term situation, but I think it's more of a reflection of what to anticipate. Steve Stricker has stepped up his game at this time in recent years so he poses a major threat to the three golfers previously mentioned." But even though Woods and Mickelson go off at the same odds to win, Mickelson is a slight -120 favorite if you bet him straight-up against Woods (even). Some of the other notables in the field and their betting odds are Las Vegans Nick Watney at 40/1, Rickie Fowler at 60/1, and former UNLV golfer Adam Scott at 60/1. Paul Casey and Ernie Els are at 30/1, while Retief Goosen, Justin Rose and Camilo Villegas join Watney at 40/1. You can click to GolfOdds.com for the complete betting numbers and any updates.
