 Las Vegas, Nevada (August 19, 2011)--In early PGA Tour betting odds released by Las Vegas' GolfOdds.com, Tiger Woods is listed as one of the favorites to win the 2012 Masters. What? But sometimes with the sports books, it's not about the game of the name, but the exposure that certain players--or teams--bring when the public goes heady on them. If Tiger opened at higher than 12/1, folks might pile on and if Tiger turns it around, the books could be on the hook for big cash. --By Brian Hurlburt, odds by Jeff Sherman.
"With eight months to improve, I couldn't open Tiger too high as he still commands support," says Jeff Sherman, the founder of GolfOdds.com and the assistant director of the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook. "It's tough trying to anticipate eight months out ... that is why I included potential phenoms Patrick Cantley and Bud Cauley. As anybody paying attention realizes, Tiger Woods is in a stunning collapse at the moment and hasn't won a major in three years. And it looks likely that Tiger won't win any tournament again in a calendar year (2011) just as he was unsuccessful in 2010.
The official opening Masters favorite is Rory McIlroy who had the lead entering the final round in 2010 but collapsed and lost before coming through at the U.S. Open. He is listed at 10/1. Mickelson joins Woods at 12/1 while Lee Westwood and Luke Donald are 20/1. Cantley is 125/1 while Cauley is 150/1.
There could be some interesting value with some of the guys down the list. Nick Watney is 30/1 while Dustin Johnson is 25/1. Steve Sticker is 40/1 while Ryo Ishikawa is 100/1. Recent PGA Championship winner opened 80/1.
