Las Vegas, Nevada (May 8, 2012)--The 2012 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP has a chance to be the most exciting in its long and very exciting history. The stars of the PGA Tour continue to line up, both literally and figuratively. With the recent victory by "next-big-thing" Rickie Fowler last week, and many other big names playing at the top of their games, the field is wide open. The Las Vegas PGA Tour betting experts at GolfOdds.com revealed Rory McIlroy as a 10/1 favorite followed by Lee Westwood at 12/1. --By Brian Hurlburt, odds by Jeff Sherman.
"McIlroy and Westwood are the two constants in golf right now," says LVH Superbook Assistant Director Jeff Sherman. "Pretty much you get what you expect going in from them. McIlroy doesn't have the greatest history at Sawgrass but he is a much different golfer confidence-wise now than in previous years. Tiger has withdrawn from Sawgrass each of the last two years and is coming in battling demons in his head questioning reverting back to old swing habits. Coming off a 40th at the Masters and a MC last week in Charlotte, his 20/1 odds are right up there for some of the highest in his career. Fowler is gaining momentum each week. He got his first-ever win internationally at the end of last year and now gained his first PGA Tour win in Charlotte. His course form is not the greatest but we'll see if he can continue to make strides like that of McIlroy and show consistency near the top."

Other golfers favored by Las Vegas include Luke Donald (15/1), Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson (each 20/1), and Rickie Fowler (40/1). As always, we take a look at the official PGATour.com Power Rankings to compare with the Vegas betting odds.
Writer Rob Bolton lists Westwood at the top of his list followed by Rory, Donald and Hunter Mahan (who is 30/1 in Vegas). Woods is nowhere to be found in the top 20 while recent World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Phil Mickelson is listed in 18th.
Bolton writes the following about Westwood: "His nine appearances at TPC Sawgrass span 13 years (1998-2010). That record is flanked by three top-10s, including a T4 two years ago. Low man on the weekend at Quail Hollow en route to a share of fifth place. Leads in greens in regulation."
