Las Vegas, Nevada (June 12, 2012)--To those not completely familiar with how Las Vegas betting odds work, sometimes it isn't the best player in the tournament who is the favorite to win. The Las Vegas PGA Tour betting odds feature Tiger Woods as the odds favorite--13/2 as of this writing--but the Las Vegas PGA Tour betting experts have a different player--Lee Westwood-- ranked with the highest "power" rank. --By Brian Hurlburt, odds by Jeff Sherman. The odds take into account the "liability" of a golfer and since Tiger is a public favorite, his odds are usually lower than what his true value as a pick is because a lot of money will be on him winning, thus creating the liability. In other instances you can find value on golfers who may not be public betting favorites. "It's gonna be accuracy off the tee and approach shots (that are important)," says Jeff Sherman, the founder of Las Vegas' GolfOdds.com. "The course is not the longest so will take driver out of play more than other U.S. Opens. That should benefit Tiger. I expect top performaces out of the likes of Lee Westwood, Matt Kuchar, Sergio Garcia, and Bo Van Pelt for an escalating degree of odds available."

Westwood opened 12/1 with Kuchar at 25/1, Garcia at 40/1, andd Van Pelt at 50/1. Tiger has been fluctuating back and forth but according to Sherman late action came in on him in the last few hours and his odds are now 13/2 (+650) after opening at 7/1.
As always, we take a look at the official PGATour.com Power Rankings and compare them to the Las Vegas betting odds. Luke Donald leads the Power Rankings followed by Woods, Westwood, Dustin Johnson, and Justin Rose. Donald opened 12/1 in Vegas whole Johnson was 25/1 and Rose was 30/1.
Rankings guru Rob Bolton writes the following about Donald: "As poised as he ever will be to win a major. Just three weeks removed from a successful title defense at the BMW PGA Championship, his second victory worldwide this year. Ranks eighth on the PGA TOUR in fairways hit and fifth in bogey avoidance."
There are also some interesting matchups posted by Sherman, the assistant director of the LVH Superbook. He opened Tiger as a -145 favorite vs. Rory McIlroy (+125) and listed Lee Westwood as a -125 favorite against Donald (+105). This shows Sherman's belief in Westwood as his own power favorite--irregardless of his odds--heading into the event June 14-17 at Olympic Club.
