The 2012 Barclays Official Las Vegas Betting Report: Bethpage Black Is the Story

Las Vegas, Nevada (August 20, 2012)--Bethpage Black is regarded as one of the stiffest challenges in all of golf. And this year, the 2012 The Barclays, the first event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, is being played at the course. The co-favorites for the week, as released by the Las Vegas PGA Tour golf betting experts, are Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who each opened 7/1. Jeff Sherman said that he did check out who did well at the 2009 U.S. Open for a glimpse at who might do well this year. --By Brian Hurlburt, odds by Jeff Sherman. "Bethpage Black is long and challenging," says Jeff Sherman, the Founder of Las Vegas' GolfOdds.com. "I took into account how golfers performed at the 2009 US Open as a small sample but useful tool." The 2009 U.S. Open was played at Bethpage and won by Lucas Glover. Phil Mickelson was second followed by David Duval. Woods finished T6 while a young Rory Mc finished 10th.

In all, five golfers recorded tournament totals of under par at the '09 Open, which was a bit of surprise to many experts. The question this week is will the course take over the story or will a golfer--or group of golfers--survive or thrive at the "Black".

Rob Bolton, author of the PGATour.com Power Rankings believes the players familiar with the course will have an advantage, and notes that the course will play in a similar manner to the U.S. Open in 2009. "As you'd expect, golfers familiar with the routing should enjoy an advantage," writes Bolton. "Still, the course will require a consistent blend of control throughout the bag. Total driving is critical given the overall length. Look for plenty of drivers off the tee, too, as in addition to the trio of par 5s, five of the par 4s can extend in excess of 475 yards. Finding the short grass is equally as important since the small putting surfaces are more likely to reject approaches from lies off the fairway."

Bolton listed Rory Mc as the favorite followed by Bubba Watson (25/1 in Vegas), Keegan Bradley (30/1), Woods, and Justin Rose (25/1) as his Top Five in the Power Rankings. Sergio Garcia, who won this past week's event, was 10th in the Power Rankings and 25/1 in Vegas.
