PGA Tour Betting Report 2013: Several Winners Skip Hyundai Tournament of Champions

Las Vegas, Nevada (January 3, 2013)--The 2013 PGA Tour season kicks off with the playing of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions this week in Hawaii. While several of the top names are scheduled to play, several champions won't be playing. But the field is wide open of those playing with six 2012 champions opening at 12/1 to win and the co-favorites of the event. Dustin Johnson, who works with Las Vegas Golf Region resident Butch Harmon, is among the favorites. --By Brian Hurlburt, Odds by Jeff Sherman. Follow @LVGolfInsider for more betting info.

The other favorites are Matt Kuchar, Jason Dufner, Steve Stricker, Ian Poulter, and Webb Simpson. Also playing in Hawaii are three Las Vegas Golf Region residents. Nick Watney opened 15/1, Ryan Moore at 20/1, and Scott Piercy at 25/1.

"First of all, we are missing seven golfers who qualified for the event and that looks set to be the theme this season," says Jeff Sherman, the Founder of Las Vegas' GolfOdds.com. "Stricker already announced he plans on playing around 10 events this season. and Poulter just said after this week he is taking six weeks off and playing sparingly.

"The golfers that are at Kapalua this week should lend themselves to a very competitive tournament, as indicated by the close odds among the top golfers. The most notable news this week is if Ian Poulter is telling the truth--on Twitter he said he should be 40/1 when it was noted he was 12/1, and also said he wouldn't pick himself in any fantasy pick or bet this week with his own money. So we shall see how that turns out. On a positive note, I would look for Kuchar and Stricker to have strong performances on this course as they have done in the past." Poulter did move to 15/1 following his Twitter remarks.

According to the PGATour.com Power Rankings, the favorites were Kuchar, Johnson, Piercy, Poulter, and Stricker. Power Rankings expert Rob Bolton wrote the following about Piercy: "(Piercy is) fearless. And after a T12 in his debut at Kapalua last year when his scores improved every day, he's familiar with the course and its greens. Ended his 2012 season with four straight top 15s, including a T2 at the WGC-HSBC Champions."
