Las Vegas, Nevada (April 1, 2010)--It’s time again to find America’s best two-person team. For the third straight year, ESPN’s National Golf Challenge will take place at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. The event, which is a two-man, best-ball event (with handicap) will see three stages of the tournament played at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort including an opening round on Friday, April 30.--By Bill Bowman.
“This is our third year and we’re really looking at this as a great long-term relationship,” said Greg Brockelman, head golf professional. The Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort is comprised of three 18-hole Pete Dye designs: Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain and The Wolf. “It’s a pretty neat event and we’re very happy to be part of it with ESPN. We get about 150 participants (in the opening round) and we also host a regional final which brings in about 144 players and the national finals (Oct. 21-23) which bring in 250-plus players.” There is a men’s and women’s gross division (men from yellow tees and women from white tees), men’s and women’s net division (men from yellow tees and women from white tees) and a men’s and women’s senior division (55+ with men playing from white tees and women playing from red tees). Brockelman said one of the keys to success in the event is having solid teammates. “The teams that have done well in the past have probably been between 10 and 20 handicaps,” Brockelman said. “That way they are fairly good players and they do get some help with strokes.” But, Brockelman is quick to add that ESPN tournament officials do a great job of monitoring handicaps. The Las Vegas Paiute’s first round will be held Friday, April 30 on the Snow Mountain Course. Cost is $119 per player ($99 if players have the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort’s PACC card). Click here to sign up for the tournament or for more information. There’s also an extra triple-play option. If players pay an additional $49, they are paired up with everyone in their foursome and that gives them additional chances to win. When the finals come back to Las Vegas later in the year with more than 250 players, two of the Paiute’s courses will be used with each division playing on the same course. “The people at ESPN love the fact that we’re a multiple course facility,” Brockelman said. “That way we can get all the players out at the same time and get them finished in time for all the award ceremonies and other event activities.”But it’s the golf tournament itself that is the driving force. “It’s a very player-friendly event and format and ESPN does a great job with the tournament,” Brockelman said. “They have a very nice gift pack for the players and the winners are very well compensated.” The courses at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort are three of the more than 50 Las Vegas area golf courses.
