"We are a non-profit organization dedicated to bettering the lives of displaced families and homeless animals by offering the tools and services needed to help the less fortunate get back on their feet," reads the mission of the website of this new organization founded by Nicole Dutt-Roberts, the executive Director of the Southern Nevada golf Association plus a PGA of America professional. Cascata is a Rees Jones design owned and operated by Harrah's Entertainment, and has been rated by ZAGAT as one of the best golf experiences in the country. The tournament also includes a clinic by Harmon, and if you've never seen Harmon do a clinic, you owe it to yourself to attend this event just for that experience alone. The awards are sponsored by Cleveland Golf. Harmon has been voted for 10 years running as the top instructor by Golf Digest.
"I am very honored to be the host of Gimme Shelter Foundation’s charity golf tournament," said Harmon in the intro letter. "I am a relative newcomer to the pet world with the happy addition of our two Labrador brothers six years ago. Hunter and Rio are my first experience with having pets in my life and their unconditional love has motivated me to get involved with this wonderful rescue organization, Gimme Shelter Foundation. The Organization’s mission is to help displaced families and homeless animals in the Las Vegas Valley by providing a job, guidance, a place to call home, and the TLC needed to rehabilitate both humans and animals." Harmon operates the Butch Harmon School of Golf at Rio Secco Golf Club, the sister course to Cascata. All golfers are welcome at his school with schools available with Harmon or with his outstanding staff of pros. And you never know who you'll run into at the school from Mickelson to Natalie Gulbis to Stewart Cink, all tour players who work with Harmon.
Tournament literature shows that Nevada has a homelessness rate of 13% so it's a very important time to support this cause. The homeless pet problem has also shown a dramatic increase due to the poor economy and housing crisis. The shelters are inundated with pets being relinquished and have implemented a policy of killing them in 3 days if they are not adopted in order to make room for the new arrivals. It is estimated that the death rate at the shelters will rise from 30,000 in 2008 to 45,000 in 2009. Also, many cats and dogs are being turned loose on the streets to fend for themselves and worse yet are the ones left behind in the home after the family has moved out. Many of these animals are starving to death because banked owned properties will sit for weeks before an employee will make a visit to the home.
Both Cascata and Rio Secco Golf Club are designed by Jones, who is often referred to as the U.S. Open Doctor for his extensive renovations of golf courses that went on to become host courses for the national championship. Both are resort Las Vegas golf courses and open for play by all.
