 April 13, 2008--The cup runneth over for the World's Number One golf instructor, as voted recently by Golf Digest. Butch Harmon, who operates the Butch Harmon School of Golf at Las Vegas' Rio Secco Golf Club, has landed another world-class golfer as multiple major champion Ernie Els has left David Leadbetter and is seeking advice from Harmon. The list is long of pro golfers who already spend much time at the Harmon facility that rests on the back of the Rio Secco driving range. Other pros that currently work with Harmon--or other high qualified teachers on his staff--include Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Natalie Gulbis, Fred Couples, Nick Watney, Tom Purtzer, Charley Hoffman, In-Bee Park, and several others, so many that it is tough to keep track of them all. Els says he has been struggling recently and wanted someone besides Leadbetter to take a look, and Harmon has a proven track record of working with the game's best. "My posture has been out of whack," Els told the media at The Masters. "My hips and shoulders were turning too much and I was collapsing at the top. ... I'm trying to keep the club in front of me and make a more athletic move through the ball." "I'm trying to give him a different set of eyes," Harmon was quoted as saying at The Masters. "You'll see a different look. There are a lot of areas we're working on and it'll take time."
Those close to the situation say Els hasn't visited the Harmon School facility in Las Vegas as of yet, but that Harmon and Els had exchanged video prior to the Masters. But you never know who you will see at Rio Secco or the school on a daily basis because of the many pros that work on swings at the indoor-outdoor, state-of-the-art facility. The word is that Els has improved his posture and shortened his backswing under Harmon's tutelage. Harmon has also worked with Tiger Woods and Greg Norman in the past when both golfers were ascending to the top spot in the world rankings.
