Walk-Off Hole In One at Las Vegas 2010 PGA Tour Event Still Fresh For Jonathan Byrd

Las Vegas, Nevada (January 9, 2011 UPDATE 1/10 2:00 AM PST)--It was the only time in the history of the PGA Tour that a tournament had ended with a hole in one. Big moments are common place in Las Vegas, and Jonathan Byrd's 6-iron to end the 2010 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open last October was a true Vegas jackpot. Courtesy of that victory and swing, Byrd opened the 2011 PGA Tour season in Hawaii playing in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, reserved only for 2010 winners. The events of three months ago seemed like yesterday for him. Byrd won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in a playoff over Robert Garrigus.--By Brian Hurlburt.

PGA Tour Brings Back Tournament of Champions Name Harkening Back To Glory Days of Las Vegas Golf

Las Vegas, Nevada (January 5, 2011)--The golfers on the course will get the most attention this week in Hawaii during the playing of the PGA Tour's Hyundai Tournament of Champions, but fans of Las Vegas golf are happy to see a title change for the event in 2011. For the first time since 1993, the name includes the words "Tournament of Champions", being altered from the SBS Championship title. The inaugural Tournament of Champions was played in 1953  in Las Vegas at the Desert Inn Country Club, and was played at Las Vegas golf courses through 1968. What is now Las Vegas National Golf Club--then called the Stardust Country Club--was the host course for the final two years it was played in Las Vegas. --By Brian Hurlburt.

Las Vegas Golf Course SuperIntendent Earns Praise Nationally

Las Vegas, Nevada (December 15, 2010)--They are usually the guys behind the scenes who only get noticed when something goes wrong. A brown patch on the turf? An unkept bunker? The damn golf course superintendent isn't doing the job. But sometimes they are acknowledged for good things, such as superb conditions or other noteworthy accomplishments. That is the case for Las Vegas golf course "super" PJ McGuire, who recently earned praise nationally from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for his recent role in helping to elevate the game in Nevada. --By Brian Hurlburt

Las Vegas Golf News and Notes From PGA Tour Longest Drives and More

Las Vegas, Nevada (December 10, 2010)--There is always a ton going in the world of Las Vegas golf courses, and even though the holidays are upon us, there is much happening. First up is that Las Vegas golfers Andres Gonzales and Cameron Tringale successfully earned PGA Tour playing privileges at Q School earlier this week. Gonzales is a former UNLV golfer while Tringale moved to the Las Vegas area in 2009 along with newly-crowned PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Rickie Fowler. Tringale is said to still live in the are while Fowler has moved to Florida. --By Brian Hurlburt.

UNLV Lady Rebel Golfers Add Three Top Recruits

Las Vegas, Nevada (December 1, 2010)--The UNLV women’s golf team has received signed national letters of intent from Mayko Chwen Wang, Dana Finkelstein and Marquerite Swearingen to enroll at UNLV and play golf for the Rebels starting with the 2011-12 season, announced head coach Amy Bush. “We are thrilled these student-athletes have chosen to attend UNLV,” said Bush.“ They all bring excellent golfing experience and winning attitudes to our team. The addition of these three student-athletes will help continue the success of UNLV women’s golf and I look forward to coaching them in 2011.” The three are each ranked in the junior Golfweek Top 100.--Staff report with UNLV Sports Information.

UNLV Golf Adds Las Vegas Star A.J. McInerney Plus Others Making Future Bright

Las Vegas, Nevada (November 21, 2010 UPDATE 11/22)--The legendary UNLV Golf program, headed by Hall of Fame Head Coach Dwaine Knight, has landed the biggest potential star in the Las Vegas Golf Region, plus two other top recruits. The program won the NCAA Golf Championship in 1998, and has more than a handful of alumni winning golf tournaments on the PGA Tour on a regular basis, but hasn't been a major force on the national scene in a few years. The recent news about the commitments of some top Las Vegas Golf Region and national talent, however, has Rebel Golf primed for an awakening. --By Brian Hurlburt.

Las Vegas Golf Courses Designed by Rees Jones Stay Green With New Process By Key Golf

Las Vegas, Nevada (November 18, 2010)--Cascata and Rio Secco Golf Club are the only two Las Vegas golf courses designed by the legendary Rees Jones, and both are operated by Harrah's Entertainment, along with arguably Las Vegas' most historic course, Las Vegas National Golf Club. These Las Vegas golf courses boast solid resumes, with Cascata earning 29 out of 30 points in a ZAGAT survey, Rio Secco Golf Club hosting the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge and the WAC Conference Championships, and Las Vegas National is the home to the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame and hosted a regional qualifier for the U.S. Senior Open over the summer. Somewhat amazingly, the management of the courses entrusts maintenance to a third party, Key Golf, with stellar results. --By Brian Hurlburt.

PGA Tour Tournament of Champions Has Deep Ties to Las Vegas Golf Courses Is New Again

Las Vegas, Nevada (November 5, 2010)--Sometimes it feels like all things start and end with Las Vegas. And when it comes to the PGA Tour's Tournament of Champions, an event that was first played in 1953 at the Las Vegas' Desert Inn Golf Club, it did all start here, and now the PGA Tour has announced the event is going back to the good old days by again including 'Tournament of Champions' in the name of the tournament. Starting in 2011, the former SBS Championship will be called the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and will kick off the PGA Tour in Hawaii. Butch Harmon Highlights RE/Max World Long Drive Championship Week in Las Vegas Golf Region

Las Vegas, Nevada (November 3, 2010)--The RE/Max World Long Drive Championship is THE power event in golf, and championship week in the Las Vegas Golf Region kicks off this week in the Las Vegas Golf Region. Specifically in the golf destination of Mesquite, Nevada, where there are several top golf courses.
