With the nation's best college golf teams descending on Las Vegas golf course Southern Highlands Golf Club March 9-11, it is the perfect time for the UNLV Mens Golf team, headed by Hall-of-Fame coach Dwaine Knight, to showcase the best of the program. A recent article in VegasGolfer Magazine went into detail about the "foundation" of Rebel golf that includes the mental, the physical, the golf and academics. Each "foundation" of Rebel golf is headed by experienced experts, and allows the Rebel team to maintain maximum focus. As Knight says, "The goal is to provide the players a program that allows them to compete at the highest levels in all phases, and to get an education and win a national championship." Physical Therapist Keith Kleven, Mental Coach Dr. Mark Guadagnoli, Rebel Assistant Coach Andy Bischel and Knight are the leaders of the foundation.
In addition to focusing in on these four areas, the Rebels are also fortunate to have a home course like Southern Highlands Golf Club, the private layout that was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and Sr. The owners and membership open up all phases of the club to the players, and one of the first stops for potential recruits is the club.
The Rebels also have access to many of the best golf courses in Las Vegas including Rio Secco Golf Club, Cascata, Las Vegas Country Club, Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort, Bali Hai Golf Club, Royal Links Golf Club and many others.
And the UNLV Rebel Golf Foundation is made up of some of the biggest movers and shakers in Las Vegas, and was a key reason that UNLV attracted Knight to the school many years ago. The Rebel Golf Foundation was created by the Las Vegas Founders, a group of volunteer business people who have been operating Las Vegas' PGA Tour event for a quarter century.
