August 6, 2008 (UPDATED 9:00 AM PST 8/10/08) —Only one of the five golfers with ties to Las Vegas made the cut. Dean Wilson was in a tie for 61st hearing into the final round. The PGA Championship tees off Thursday, August 7, and there will be five players with deep ties to Las Vegas golf courses in the field, and one hoping to get into the field. The event is being played Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan and former UNLV golfer Adam Scott (pictured) and Tommy Armour III, who grew up in Las Vegas, are in the field, as are two other former Rebel golfers, Chad Cambpell and Ryan Moore, in addition to current resident Dean Wilson. Another former UNLV player, Charley Hoffman, is an alternate and hopes to get into the field if somebody falls out before tee off. (NOTE: Hoffman was listed as getting into the field, but for unclear reasons wasn't in the final competition) Scott is reportedly again battling an illness or injury at a major but was seen out practicing with Las Vegas pro Butch Harmon earlier this week so should be ready to go. Scott, one of the world's best players, battled a high fever at last week's World Golf Championship event at Firestone, and he struggled with a hand injury earlier this year at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Armour III is on a hot streak, both on and off the golf course. Armour III has finished in the top 10 in five of his last 11 tournaments, and has earned more than $1.3 million this year. He is 42nd in the FedEx Cup standings. Off the course, he was recently announced as a 2008 inductee into the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame. He grew up on the fairways of the old Desert Inn golf course in Las Vegas. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, Tommy Armour, who won the PGA in 1930.
Moore was the 2004 NCAA champion while playing at UNLV. Campbell was an All-American at UNLV and is a multiple PGA Tour champion and a past member of the United States Ryder Cup team (he is 19th on the team points list for 2008). Wilson is a PGA Tour champion who lives in Summerlin, a suburb of Las Vegas. Hoffman was a member of the 1998 UNLV NCAA title team and is a past champion of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
