TPC Las Vegas was designed by PGA Tour Design Services with Raymond Floyd serving as the professional playing consultant. "The theme of this course is more the natural, rugged look to create contrast," says Chris Gray, Director of Design for PGA TOUR Design Services. "That is why we incorporated the natural wash areas and transplanted the natural desert plants, so it would not look created." Another way to describe TPC Las Vegas is "Desert Elegance" because the emerald green fairways contrasting with the natural desert areas creates a very elegant golf feel and beautiful Las Vegas golf canvas.
Until recently, the TPC Las Vegas was called TPC Canyons, but course officials renamed it TPC Las Vegas to better capture the magnitude of playing this Las Vegas golf legend that has hosted the world's best golfers. “We are very excited about the re-positioning of the club, which will have a dramatic effect on our ability to market the property to a worldwide audience of leisure and business travelers, event planners and conventioneers,” said General Manager Dan Hammell when the change was announced. “At the same time, our tribute to the history of golf in Las Vegas will help golfers to fully appreciate the considerable impact the city of Las Vegas has had on the game of golf.”
The history of golf in Las Vegas is very long and includes the inaugural Tournament of Champions on the PGA Tour that was played in 1953 at the old Desert Inn Golf Club. Also, the 1983 Panasonic Pro-Celebrity Classic was the first tournament in the history of the PGA Tour to have a purse of more than $1 million. And in 1996, some guy named Tiger Woods won the Las Vegas Inviational, his first official PGA Tour win. Currently, the PGA Tour plays the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin, and the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge is played at Rio Secco Golf Club.
