April 4, 2009–Once again, UNLV Head Basketball Coach Lon Kruger is showing how much he cares for the Las Vegas community and good causes. Kruger is once again hosting the Coaches Vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic May 31-June 2. This Las Vegas golf tournament and event is to be played at Las Vegas golf courses Southern Highlands Golf Club, a private course that is the home of UNLV golf, and TPC Las Vegas (pictured), a PGA Tour-owned and operated public resort course. The event raises funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society and team and individual spots are still available for purchase.
Several of the nations’ top basketball coaches and sports fans are invited to join host Coach Lon Kruger for the three-day event. A “Party at the Palms” will tip off the event on Sunday, May 31 at 7 p.m. Meet your favorite college basketball coaches at the exclusive party and silent auction in the Palms Casino Resort’s stunning two-story, 10,000-square-foot Hardwood Suite equipped with its own basketball court and scoreboard.
Tickets cost just $100 per person for the cocktail reception and include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and live entertainment. Individual spots for golf are $2500 with teams selling for $10,000. Two days of golf at exclusive courses will follow with the first round of golf at Southern Highlands Golf Club on Monday, June 1, and a second round at TPC Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 2. At the 2008 Coaches Vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic, several other NCAA coaches joined Kruger to help the cause. Among the coaches who participated included Tim Floyd (University of Southern California), Mark Fox (University of Nevada-Reno now Georgia), Jim Boylen (University of Utah), Norm Stewart (retired coach from University of Missouri), Frank Martin (Kansas State University), Mark Turgeon (Texas A&M), Bobby Lutz (University of North Carolina-Charlotte), Dana Altman (Creighton University), Bill Grier (University of San Diego), Tim Jankovich (Illinois State University), and Bob Boyd (retired coach from University of Southern California).
Those coaches mixed and mingled at the notorious Hardwood Suite at the Palms Resort and Casino where UNLV coaching icons Jerry Tarkanian and Charlie Spoonhour joined in the celebration. The UNLV cheer squad entertained the crowd while guests bid on authentic silent auction items and showcased their talent in a quick pick-up game on the suite’s infamous basketball court. Las Vegas locals Cliff Findlay, Rob Martinez, Mike Lynch and Bill Russell were the tournament winners and took home the first-place prize of sterling silver putters from Tiffany & Co. Missouri coaching legend Norm Stewart’s team took the second place spot followed by University of North Carolina–Charlotte’s Coach Bobby Lutz’s foursome coming in at third.
