Jack Nicklaus' new PGA Golf Club, Coyote Springs, led the way at #7 while Cascata, a Rees Jones classic, was at #14. Wolf Creek Golf Club, a fantasy course located in Mesquite (77 miles north of Las Vegas) came in at #35 while Bali Hai Golf Club, a tropical golf experience located right in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip, was #47. The second annual Golf World "Readers' Choice Awards" recognize the 50 best private, public and resort golf facilities in the country. The distinctions are based solely on the input of Golf World readers and will be published in the September 28 issue of the magazine. Golf World readers were asked to evaluate the nation's golf facilities in three distinct categories-private, public and resort-based on 13 different performance criteria, such as quality of the course, course conditions, reputation/prestige and service. More than 46,000 individual facility ratings were received.
In all, there were 21 Las Vegas golf courses that earned a score of 75 or above, showing the depth of quality golf in the Las Vegas area. PGA Golf Club at Coyote Springs, located about 50 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, is the newest Las Vegas golf course and was designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course earned one of the highest rankings for quality of course (9.58 out of 10), but was the top-rated course for course conditions (9.75). Overall, the course earned a 93.00 rating.
Cascata is one of two Rees Jones-designed Las Vegas golf courses that is operated by Harrah's Entertainment. Cascata earned very high marks for course conditions (9.6) and also for its world-class clubhouse (9.41). Overall, Cascata earned a rating of 91.34. Wolf Creek Golf Club earned high marks for course quality (9.09) and fairly consistent marks in all of the categories, but an abnormally low rating for practice facilities (6.01) knock off several points in the ranking. There is a small driving range at Wolf Creek, but if a few points were added in this category, Wolf Creek would have jumped into the top 25. Bali Hai Golf Club is probably the most conveniently-located Las Vegas golf course as it is located right in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. These 18 tropical Las Vegas golf holes play in the shadows of the Mandalay Bay resort, and offer beauty and challenge. Bali Hai earned high marks for course quality (8.54), food and dining (8.84) in addition to other area, but was also marked down for practice facilities or it could have ranked quite a bit higher.
