Year one of the Vegas World Am went well for golfers and organizers, and entries are already way up over the event's first year, and there are still several months left before the event. Blake Barnes won the under 49 year old flight last year and had good things to say about the event during the awards dinner.
"Anytime you can come to Las Vegas and play golf, let alone be apart of an event like this, it's always good," said Barnes of Texas. "I thought the golf courses we played were great but one thing you have to do when you play in Las Vegas is hit good shots. With these courses, if you hit good shots you are rewarded and if you hit bad shots you are penalized. You have to be on your game to play here."
The Las Vegas World Amateur is a golf competition for golfers of all skill levels. It is an event owned and operated by the Southern Nevada Golf Association. The Southern Nevada Golf Association is the governing body for the game of golf and is licensed by the USGA for the region, responsible for overseeing the USGA Handicap System as well as the USGA Course Rating System.
The event is open to all golfers – men, women, young and old – with a valid USGA Handicap Index (issued by a licensed club or federation). It features six competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 and under to the super seniors (70+). Within the divisions, golfers are flighted by closely grouped handicaps. The event features numerous flights and the top four finishers in each flight advance to the Championship round, an 18-hole shootout that determines the World Champion. The tournament is scheduled to be played on approximately 6 different premiere Las Vegas area courses, and each flight plays a different course each day.
