Las Vegas, Nev. (August 3, 2016)–These Rebel golfers are good on and off the course, but graduating senior captain AJ McInerney has taken it to another level. McInerney was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced this week. He was also named the Academic All-Mountain West Conference team. —By Brian Hurlburt.
For Division I golfers to be eligible, the student-athletes must have been a junior or senior academically during the 2015-16 season, have competed in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitive rounds, had a stroke average under 76.0 and maintained a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
On the course this season, McInerney played in 10 tournaments for the Rebels, finishing in the individual top five on four occasions. He earned medalist honors at the LMU Invitational, had five total rounds in the 60s during the year and shot par or better in 11 rounds. His scoring average was 73.24 per round.
McInerney missed the playoffs with injuries but served as the team’s captain throughout the season.
