The best description for this Las Vegas golf course, a former host of events on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, is desert elegance. Just saying the words feels good. Desert elegance. Yes, that feels right.
TPC Las Vegas is one of several excellent golf courses that make up the PGA Tour-owned national TPC Network, and is a sister golf course to the likes of Las Vegas’ private TPC Summerlin—site of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on the PGA Tour—TPC Sawgrass, and TPC Scottsdale among others. And TPC Las Vegas provides as many—if not more—memorable shots and holes as any course in the network.
The TPC Las Vegas—formerly the TPC at the Canyons—was designed by PGA Tour Design Services with esteemed architect Bobby Weed spearheading the project. Hall-of-Famer and former Las Vegas Senior Classic champion Raymond Floyd served as the PGA Tour player consultant.
“As far as aesthetics and playability, I would put TPC Las Vegas up against any golf course you care to mention,” Floyd has said. “It’s as unique as they come and I’m very proud of the way it has turned out, especially given the challenges of designing a golf course on such a challenging piece of property. But I think a golf course is kind of like a fine wine. The best come from the toughest pieces of ground.”
The TPC Las Vegas course stretches 7,063 yards and is a par 71, and features holes that dance in, out and around the rugged and beautiful desert washes of the Las Vegas desert. Accuracy is a key off of the tee here, but the fairways provide enough room for some lack of accuracy.
GreensKeeper.org REAL golfer comment:
“This course is fantastic. I played on 7/31/11. Top five days of golf ever. Somehow I caught it when it wasn’t hot. If you’re not sure where to play and you’re in Vegas, play this course. Even if you’re in Vegas and you know which courses you want to play, make sure you play this course. I will be back.”
The par 3, second hole is appropriately title “Canyon” and is basically an “island green” in the desert. Tee shots are played from boxes above the hole to a green surrounded by desert and strategically-placed boulders that make up the “walls” of the hole.
Other astounding TPC Las Vegas holes include the par 4, 13th hole called “Death Valley” and the par 4, 14th hole called “Gorge-ous”.
TPC Las Vegas is always very environmentally friendly, and is officially sanctioned by the Audubon Society as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary”. It was only the 138th golf course in the world to earn that distinction, and only the second to do so in Nevada at the time.
When you play the TPC Las Vegas you will literally be walking in the shoes of players from the PGA Tour and Champions Tour. Past players who have won golf tournaments played at TPC Las Vegas include Jim Furyk, Hale Irwin, Raymond Floyd, Jim Colbert, Stuart Appleby, Bill Glasson, and many others.
And TPC Las Vegas honors the prestigious history of professional golf in Las Vegas by displaying photos, mementos, memorabilia, and other Las Vegas golf items that reveal a history that dates back to the 1953 Tournament of Champions, the first time that event was ever played on the PGA Tour.
TPC Las Vegas is a true PGA Tour golf experience, and should rate very high on your things-to-do Las Vegas golf list.
